First Communications selects Nokia Siemens Networks to increase capacity and coverage

Carrier and enterprise customers of First Communications now enjoy high-speed, lower latency bandwidth services between Newark, NJ, and Buffalo, NY. The integrated telecommunications carrier has chosen Nokia Siemens Networks’ long-haul dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system to efficiently manage its network as capacity demand grows. First Communications also expects to use this platform as it continues to expand its optical transport network. Plans are underway to add high capacity routes to Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, Ashburn, VA, and extend into Toronto.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) issued a self-titled “important announcement” on 2 August stating that it proposed to suspend BlackBerry messenger, email, and web-browsing services from 11 October. This was the latest development in an apparently long-running discussion between the UAE government and the Canadian company Research in Motion (RIM) that operates the BlackBerry service.The TRA adopted this position because RIM’s secure telecommunications service prevented the UAE government from monitoring messages and emails, and restricting access to forbidden web content.

The Saudi Arabian Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) followed suit within a few days, announcing a ban on BlackBerry service to be put into effect by 5 August. E-Marine Signs Major Maintenance Agreement to Cover East African Submarine Network (EASSy)

E-marine today announced a maintenance and storage agreement with the East African Submarine System (EASSy), a fiber-optic cable that will greatly improve access to high-performance Internet, business and mobile-phone data services in twenty-one African nations. E-marine will now take responsibility for maintaining up to an 8,600km-strech of the EASSy submarine cable network. It will also provide secure storage for supplies and accessories in its state-of-the-art Bonded Cable Depot in the Port of Salalah, Oman.
The agreement was signed by “EASSy O&MSC Chairs, Vinod Kumar Verma and Ryan Sher and Omar Bin Kalban, Managing Director & CEO of E-marine.
