BlackBerry services banned in UAE as BlackBerry architecture prevents government monitoring
Tuesday, 03 August 2010 16:24

The UAE government’s decision to ban some functions of RIM’s BlackBerry from October 11, citing security risks, reflects concern among some governments that the BlackBerry service does not allow them to monitor data traffic sent and received by BlackBerry users, and that this data is handled and stored offshore out of government control.

The BlackBerry platform architecture relies on dedicated data centres (NOCs) which handle all BlackBerry data traffic over a secure, encrypted connection between the NOC and the handset. Some governments are uncomfortable with the solution because they have little or no visibility into BlackBerry data traffic, and are concerned that BlackBerry handsets may be used for criminal purposes.

Spam in the second quarter of 2010: massive attacks using fake notifications from social networks
Sunday, 01 August 2010 16:22

Kaspersky Lab announces the publication of its spam report for the second quarter of 2010. According to the report, one of the most significant events in the last quarter was an unprecedentedly large mass mailing that used HTML-based threats in the form of emails disguised as legitimate notifications from social networks.

An email was distributed that was made to look like a notification from social networks, email providers and popular websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Amazon, Windows Live, YouTube, Skype, and Wikipedia. These emails were very reminiscent of phishing attempts. However, if a user clicked on the link, they would be taken to a hacked site, from where a malicious script would then be downloaded.

Most often, these links used Trojan-Downloader.JS.Pegel.S, a Trojan that was the most common malicious program found in all unwanted correspondence during the second quarter. These types of Trojans are HTML pages that contain scenarios written in JavaScript. Trojan downloaders are designed to redirect users to a cybercriminal’s webpage containing both advertising content and malicious code that will be downloaded onto the user's computer. Trojans from the ‘Redirector’ family also behave in the same manner.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 receives top marks from AV-Comparatives
Thursday, 29 July 2010 16:14

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces that the AV-Comparatives laboratory has awarded Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 the highest mark possible in tests designed to analyze the product’s proactive defense capabilities.

Experts from the authoritative Austrian test lab analyzed the performance of twenty of the most popular computer security products from leading vendors. The test focused on the quality of proactive defense provided by each product during on-demand scans.

All of the solutions were tested using out-of-date signature databases and made active use of static heuristics and extended signatures relating to malware families. The security products were pitted against a set of over 27,000 brand new malware samples that had been detected after the antivirus databases were last updated. This test was designed to assess each solution’s ability to defend a user’s PC from new threats for which individual signatures have not yet been released.

NetApp and intel Lead evolution to 10 Gigabit Unified Ethernet networking
Sunday, 01 August 2010 16:14

NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) today announced it will support the Intel® Ethernet X520 family of SFP+10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) server adapters. This extends NetApp’s ecosystem of tested Ethernet solutions and offers customers more ways to deploy an end-to-end Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) infrastructure. By offering customers tested options to make the transition from a Fibre Channel infrastructure to a high-performance FCoE infrastructure, NetApp helps them increase the flexibility of their IT to manage more storage and protocols at lower costs.

10GbE unified networking provides a simple, flexible, and well-understood fabric for today’s dynamic data centers and lays the groundwork for new computing models, including cloud computing. With long histories of leadership in Ethernet storage and networking, NetApp and Intel are helping drive the transition to a unified data center on 10GbE. Both companies were early supporters of FCoE. NetApp is the first storage vendor to support native FCoE storage, and Intel is the first Ethernet adapter vendor to support Open FCoE (www.open-fcoe.org), which enables FCoE in standard 10GbE adapters.

Global Upgrade Makes Internet More Secure
Thursday, 29 July 2010 10:22

Helps defend users against specific types of cyber crime

The security of the global Internet has been bolstered by a historic collaboration between government and the private sector. ICANN has joined the U.S. Department of Commerce and VeriSign Inc. to add security at the top of the domain name system – the technical infrastructure behind the Internet’s “phone book” - to protect Internet users from certain forms of online fraud.

“A cyber criminal can steal your money or your personal data without you even knowing it. Cyber crime doesn’t respect national boundaries,” said Rod Beckstrom, President and CEO of ICANN. “This upgrade will help disrupt the plans of criminals around the world who hope to exploit this crucial part of the Internet infrastructure to steal from unsuspecting people.”

With the Internet’s pervasive role in daily life expanding rapidly, finding viable solutions to cyber crime is imperative. Deployment of Domain Name System Security Extensions, or DNSSEC, at the “root” of the Internet has laid the foundation for a new generation of innovative cyber security solutions by creating a global authentication platform - a common source of trust in the validity of Internet addresses.
